Social Security Offers Tips About Handling SS Card

It may not be all that safe to carry your Social Security card around with you.

Jack Myers, with Social Security, says that carrying your Social Security card is a risk for identiy theft. It someone were to steal your card, it could cause some major problems. He advises to keep your card at home or in a vault.

Myers says that it's important to know how to replace your card, if it is lost. He says that while a Social Security card can be important, it's more important to have your number memorized. Most places don't even ask for one anymore.

Myers says that the process to replace your Social Security card is not difficult. Yet, there are several steps that need to be taken. He says that a State ID will need to be taken to your local Social Security office, which is easier than sending them through the mail.
