A man on parole for the 1975 killing of an Illinois sheriff's deputy has been arrested in Missouri for trying to steal an ATM.

Reports indicate Ronald Edwards was paroled in May from the Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro. Edwards served half of his 40-year sentence in the death of Sangamon County Deputy William Simmons. But on Jan. 3 the 66-year-old Edwards was arrested with another man near Laddonia, Mo.

The pair is charged with burglary and other felony counts for allegedly trying to steal an ATM from a convenience store. They are jailed in Mexico, Mo, on $60,000 cash bonds.

The deputy's 1975 murder was unsolved until 1992 when Edwards told authorities about his involvement. He pleaded guilty in 1994.
