New Peoria Police Unit Has Troubled Past

The Peoria Police Department has launched a new unit geared toward preventing gun crime, but an investigation says the unit also has remnants of some of the department's most embarrassing incidents.

The department, which leaders say is in the middle of a "cultural shift," began the new Target Offenders Unit earlier this month.

Reports indicate, among other things, that former officers had been involved in drunken-driving crashes with felony charges, an incident of alleged illegal surveillance that slapped one officer with a no-stalking order.

Reports cite interviews, court documents and confidential documents provided.

Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard says the department has been moving forward on all the officer investigations with the best interest of the department, city and taxpayers.
