Local Schools Host 'Hoops For Haiti' Thanks To Efforts of Local Couple

This time of year, a lot of high school basketball teams will participate in the annual 'Coaches vs Cancer' event, to raise money and awareness towards cancer research. A pair of local schools chose to do something a little different this year.

Maroa-Forsyth boys basketball coach Chad Cluver and his wife, Sherry spent time in Haiti a few years ago, and recently adopted two children from Haiti. Because of the Okaw Conference connection, the two worked with other Okaw Schools to start an event this year, Hoops For Haiti. Monticello Athletic Director Randy Moss says it was a natural fit for them to join in the effort this year.

Normally, Monticello plays their Coaches vs Cancer game in mid-to-late January, traditionally against Sullivan, but this year they hosted Hoops for Haiti. The Sages hosted Sullivan last Friday night and the players for Monticello sported t-shirts to commemorate the night. Moss says they were not the only ones in the conference to do this.

Monticello held a chili-supper prior to the game Friday against Sullivan to try and draw fans in, and then a portion of their admissions went to relief efforts from the 2010 earthquake, which continue still, in Haiti. Last week, Monticello hosted two home games against Tuscola and as mentioned Sullivan, they held 50/50 raffles with the proceeds going towards the same cause.

Tomorrow on Regional Radio News, we will tell the story of Chad and Sherry Cluver and them getting the Hoops for Haiti effort up and running in the Okaw Valley Conference.
