Canadian Lottery Most Common of All Scams

The past few days, we have outlined the most common scams hitting the Clinton and surround area and ones that are effecting people the most.

The most common and oldest scam law enforcement has seen over the past several years is the "Canadian Lottery". Clinton Police Chief Mike Reidy says this scam says the person is the winner of a lottery of some sort, but to collect their winnings, they must first send in money. Chief Reidy says sending money to receive money should be a red flag.

Recently one resident was scammed and the person who scammed this individual got greedy and physically came to Clinton to her front door to receive more cash. Chief Reidy says fortunately they were informed of what was going on and they were able to apprehend the person and turn him over to the FBI.

Chief Reidy says many business owners who provide services for WesternUnion or MoneyGram generally keep an eye on their patrons, and in some cases are able to keep them from being scammed.

Chief Reidy encourages anyone who is suspects they may be getting scammed to to do some follow up research and to never hesitate to contact the local authorities with questions.
