Governor Quinn signed the new law yesterday, clearing the way for about 250-thousand immigrants to get temporary driver's licenses. Lawmakers call the measure a big step toward improving road safety in Illinois. According to the Illinois Highway Safety Coalition, unlicensed, uninsured drivers are involved in almost 80-thousand accidents in Illinois each year. Unlicensed immigrant drivers cost 64 million dollars in damage claims alone. If half of the estimated 250-thousand unlicensed immigrants are properly licensed and insured, Illinois insurance policy holders would save an estimated 46-million dollars a year in premiums.
