Wild Bald Eagle Making Appearances At Miller Park Zoo

The Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington has been the destination for an unsuspecting guest recently.

width=A bald eagle has been paying regular visits over the past month or so at the Bloomington Zoo and Superintendent Jay Tetzloff says they started noticing the eagle when a third eagle showed up with their two eagles.

While it might seem odd having a bald eagle in central Illinois, Tetzloff says Illinois has the most bald eagles in the US other than Alaska. He says normally it might be more common to see them around major bodies of water.

Tetzloff believes there could be a number of reasons the bird is hanging around the zoo. He suspects the eagle is a female who may be reaching maturity and looking to pair. He adds it may have just been flying over and saw the two eagles the zoo has.

A seasoned veteran like Tetzloff says he has seen wild animals make appearances with the animals at other zoos, but he says he's never seen one stay around as long as this eagle has. He adds, the two eagles the Zoo has are not a threat to leave because they are injured and unable to fly. They are at the Miller Park Zoo as a part of a rehabilitation program.
