Flu Season Continues, Not Too Late For Flu Shot

If you've not received your flu shot yet, it is not too late.

The Illinois Department of Public Health categorized this year's flu as an epidemic. Brian Eddings, Pharmacy Manager at Sav Mor Pharmacy in Clinton says it's not too late to get that flu shot for this year. Many retailers have run out of flu vaccines, but they just started offering them about a week ago, and offer both the normal vaccine, but the high dose vaccine for people ages 65 and up.

Because the flu is a viral illness, Eddings says once you have it, the best thing to do is rest and let it run its course. He notes while some medications do help the recovery faster, the best thing to do is to let it run its course and see a doctor.

Eddings explains when you get the flu shot, you are not automatically exempt from getting the flu. He says you may have the flu for 3-5 days and not show symptoms. He says the flu shot takes about two weeks to take full effect. To prevent getting the flu, the best thing to do is wash your hands every half hour.

Eddings notes last year's flu season was so mild, that it has exploded this year, making it seem so much worse. He says another reason for the continued explosion of the flu is doctors are running out of the prescription drug, Tamiflu.
