Monticello Forced To Evacuate Students Due To Fire

A fire at Monticello schools Thursday forced the evacuation of about 375 students.

About mid-day Thursday the fire alarms went off at Washington School in Monticello. Dr. Vic Zimmerman, Superintendent of Monticello Schools explains they walked out to one of the halls of Washington School and discovered smoke coming from the bathroom. He says it was revealed a roll of toilet paper was lit on fire causing damage to the bathroom.

Dr. Zimmerman explains the way Monticello schools are set up, part of that hallway houses high school classes. Those classes in that hallway were forced to other parts of the building. He says classes today have resumed as usual, however, those bathrooms have been shut down.

It's unknown how much monetary damage was caused to the bathroom. Dr. Zimmerman says there doesn't appear to be any structural damage and they were fortunate the fire was contained to that area.
