Treasurer Repays Stolen Money, Avoids Prison

A woman who stole more than $14,000 while working as treasurer for the village of San Jose won't be going to prison because she's repaid the money.

Melanie Blair pleaded guilty Thursday to theft in a plea agreement.

Mason County State's Attorney Roger Thomson says Blair was given probation and a stayed jail sentence provided that she repay the $14,671.59 that she transferred from village accounts to accounts in her name and the names of her underage daughters.

San Jose Village Board President Joe McCormick says an audit spotted a discrepancy in the village's books and bank officials helped discover the transfers made by Blair.

Blair must pay a $500 fine, serve 30 months of probation and perform 100 hours of community service.
