Local Lawmakers Not Impressed By Governor Quinn's State of the State Address

The State of the State address given Wednesday afternoon by Governor Pat Quinn did not impress local legislators.

Perhaps the biggest criticism by lawmakers locally was his disconnect with the jobs situation in downstate Illinois. State Senator Chapin Rose says he was "flabbergasted" by the Governor's view of jobs in central Illinois. Sen. Rose says he agrees though with Gov. Quinn that the state needs ethics reform.

One lawmaker was disappointed in the hypocrisy when it comes to gun control. Representative Adam Brown says the Governor is proposing to ban high powered assault rifles, however, his proposals speak otherwise. Rep. Brown says the proposals they are seeing are seeking to ban household guns.

Representative Bill Mitchell says the governor needs to make a trip to downstate Illinois and visit Decatur. Rep. Mitchell says the jobs situation is not good in Decatur, which represents the largest populated are in his district. Rep. Mitchell says "Gov. Quinn, let's face it, is just not a good Governor".

Representative Dan Brady says there is a lot of work left to do. Rep. Brady agreed with Governor Quinn, that pension reform needs to be the number one priority. But he says the Governor and the Democrats need to work with Republicans to put together a budget.

Amongst the many topics lawmakers disagreed with the Governor on, Quinn also proposed raising the minimum wage in Illinois, giving State Police better access to more accurate medical records to help reduce gun violence, gay marriage, and he pushed for online voter registrations and open primaries.
