The city of Decatur's share of a class-action settlement with the maker of the herbicide atrazine will total nearly $180,000.

Syngenta has agreed to a $105 million settlement, which is being divided among more than 1,000 communities that have spent millions to filter the weed-killer out of their drinking water.

The lawsuit claimed atrazine exposure could lead to health problems such as low birth weights, birth defects and reproductive problems. The company has countered that no one could be exposed to enough atrazine in water to affect their health.

Decatur water management Director Keith Alexander says he was "pleasantly surprised by the amount" the city will receive.

Reports indicated the money represents a fraction of the $2 million annual cost of Decatur's chemical water treatments.
