Baseball Spring Training Notes

>>Cardinals Extend Mozeliak, Matheny

(Jupiter, FL) -- The St. Louis Cardinals are extending the contracts of General Manager John Mozeliak [[ mo-ZAY-lack ]] and manager Mike Matheny. Mozeliak has been given a three-year extension through 2016, while the Cardinals have picked up the 2014 option on Matheny. Mozeliak was in the final year of his deal. He's been the Cardinals' GM since 2007. Matheny is entering his second season as skipper after replacing the retired Tony La Russa following the 2011 World Series.

>>Ventura Turns Down Extension

(Glendale, AZ) -- Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura is turning down a one-year extension offered by the team. He is under contract through 2014. Ventura says he is only worried about the two remaining seasons left on his deal. He finished third in the AL Manager of the Year voting following his first season as skipper in 2012.

>>Feldman Named Fourth Cubs Starter

(Mesa, AZ) -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Scott Feldman will be the fourth starter in the team's rotation to start the season. Feldman is in his first season with the Cubs after spending the first eight of his career with the Texas Rangers. The 30-year-old right-hander was 6-and-11 last season with 21 starts and 29 appearances. He won 17 games in 2009.

>>Angels Put Hamilton, Trout, Pujols On Display

(Tempe, AZ) -- As full squads begin reporting for spring training, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are showing off their three superstars. New slugger Josh Hamilton, AL Rookie of the Year Mike Trout and three-time NL MVP Albert Pujols [[ POO-holes ]] met with reporters Thursday in a joint media session. Hamilton joins the Halos after signing a five-year, 125-million-dollar contract during the offseason and says the chance to play with Pujols and Trout was very attractive.

The 2010 AL MVP spent the last five seasons with the Texas Rangers. He hit .285 with a career-high 43 home runs in 2012. Trout took the league by storm after a late April callup, batting .326 with 30 homers and a league-leading 49 stolen bases. Pujols overcame a slow start in his first year in the American League, finishing with a .285 average, 30 home runs and 105 RBI. The trio forms the core of an offensive lineup that has the Angels as the front-runner to win the AL West this season.
