Meteor Catches Astronomers Off Guard

A scientist at Illinois State University says astronomers were caught off guard by the meteor that exploded over Russia Friday. A large asteroid got about 18-thousand miles away from earth today but Tom Wilmitch, an astronomer at ISU, says it's not related to the meteor that hit Russia this morning.

Wilmitch says had astronomers known about the meteor, they may have been able to minimize the impact.

Wilmitch says he's seen hundreds of meteors in his lifetime, but never anything quite like the one that hit Russia Friday.

More than 12-hundred people were injured when the Meteor hit about 730 miles outside of Moscow. The Sonic boom shook the ground, shattered windows, and bent frames in some of the nearby homes.
