A prison guard at Lawrence Correctional Center is recovering after getting beat with a broom handle. Reports indicate the guard was working in a housing unit when an inmate attacked about 7:00 last night. The guard was rushed to an area hospital to be treated for what officials think is a broken arm. This is the most recent in a series of attacks throughout the prison system. An inmate dragged a guard into a cell and beat him at Pontiac last month. Just over a week later, more than a dozen inmates jumped a guard at Menard. Violence is rare at Lawrence, which is a medium security prison. But several inmates from max security lock-ups are reportedly being housed there. The AFSCME union warned prison attacks would go up if Tamms SuperMax prison was closed. That facility was shut down in December.
