Kyle Hendricks scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings to get his first win as the Cubs ended a five-game slide. Eric Stults fell to 3-and-12 after allowing three runs in five frames for San Diego. Brooks Conrad had a double while Seth Smith reached twice as the Padres lost their seventh in ten games.

Tampa Bay scored five times in the fifth and chased the St. Louis ace as Yunel Escobar ripped a two-run double. Matt Joyce added two hits and an RBI as Tampa won its sixth straight. Evan Longoria added a solo homer later in the game while southern Illinois native Jake Odorizzi pitched five-and-two-thirds innings of two-run ball to improve to 6-and-8. Wainwright fell to 12-and-5 after pitching four-and-two-thirds innings and allowing six runs, four earned. Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday each hit a solo homer for the Cards, who have lost three of five.
