McLean County Fair Opens Up Thursday; 4-H Highlight of Week

The McLean County Fair offers something for every age this week and through the weekend.

One of the most popular events of the fair are the annual 4-H events. Carolyn Hanson, with the University of Illinois Extension, notes close to 1200 kids are participating in this year's fair with over 8,000 entries.

Aside from the usual livestock entries, many 4-H participants are offering a variety of categories. Hanson explains the program is not only for those interested in livestock and farming anymore. Kids can take part in events that range from photography to baking wedding cakes. She says as they grow older, 4-Hers are also expected to develop their skills in their chosen categories.

Participants are not just judged on their various projects alone, they also research and present their own information to the judges. Hanson says this will provide these kids with life-long skills.
