Red Sox, A's Headline Trade Deadline Moves

(Oakland, CA) -- Billy Beane and the Oakland A's got the July 31 trade deadline day going with a major splash. The Oakland A's bolstered their already strong starting rotation for the stretch run. They acquired pitcher Jon Lester, outfielder Jonny Gomes and cash from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes [[ yo-ENN-ees SESS-peh-dess ]]. Boston also gets Oakland's 2015 competitive balance draft pick. Lester is 10-and-7 with a 2.52 ERA this season, but will be a free agent after this season. Gomes is batting .234 with six home runs and 32 RBI. Cespedes has a .256 average with 17 home runs and 67 RBI.

(Detroit, MI) -- The Detroit Tigers are adding a big-time starter for the stretch run. They have acquired left-hander David Price from the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-team trade involving the Seattle Mariners. The Tigers sent center fielder Austin Jackson to the M's and starter Drew Smyly [[ SMY-lee ]] to the Rays. Tampa Bay also gets minor league infielders Nick Franklin from Seattle and Willy Adames [[ ah-DAH-mess ]] from Detroit. Price now joins fellow former Cy Young winners Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer [[ SURE-zer ]] in a stacked Tigers rotation. Price is 11-and-8 with a 3.11 ERA this season.

(Miami, FL) -- The Miami Marlins are adding pitcher Jarred Cosart to their starting rotation. The Fish have acquired the 24-year-old in a six-player deal with the Houston Astros. The Marlins also got infielder Enrique Hernandez and outfielder Austin Wates in exchange for outfielder Jake Marisnick, pitcher Francis Martes, infielder Colin Moran and a 2015 competitive balance draft pick. Cosart is 9-and-7 with a 4.41 ERA in 20 starts this season.

(Bronx, NY) -- The New York Yankees have acquired infielder Martin Prado [[ mar-TEEN PRAH-doh ]] from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor league first baseman Peter O'Brien. The Snakes also get a player to be named later or cash in the deal. The 30-year-old Prado is mostly a second baseman, but will likely play the outfield for New York. He's batting .270 with five home runs and 42 RBI this season. O'Brien has a combined 33 home runs and 70 RBI this season while splitting time between Single-A and Double-A.

(Bronx, NY) -- Stephen Drew is on the move, but is staying in the American League East. The New York Yankees have acquired the veteran infielder from the Boston Red Sox. Drew is a natural shortstop, but is expected to play multiple infield positions with New York. He's batting just .176 with four home runs since signing with Boston in late May. Drew missed the first two months after rejecting a one-year qualifying offer from the Red Sox after last season.

(Cleveland, OH) -- The Seattle Mariners are adding some outfield depth with the addition of Chris Denorfia [[ deh-NOR-fee-uh ]]. The M's acquired the 34-year-old veteran from the San Diego Padres for a pair of minor leaguers. Denorfia is batting .242 with one home run, 16 RBI and eight stolen bases this season. The Pads get pitcher Stephen Kohlscheen and outfielder Abraham Almonte in return. Denorfia will be a free agent after this season.

(St. Louis, MO) -- The Milwaukee Brewers are adding a two-time Gold Glover to their outfield. The Brew Crew have acquired outfielder Gerardo [[ her-ARE-doe ]] Parra from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor league outfielder Mitch Haniger and left-hander Anthony Banda. The 27-year-old Parra is hitting .259 with six homers and 30 RBI this season. He was also the 2013 National League Defensive Player of the Year. "Baseball America" ranks Haniger as the Brewers' third-best prospect.
