ALTHOUGH THE TWILIGHT PARADE WAS CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN…THE ILLINOIS STATE FAIR STILL UNOFFICIALLY KICKED OFF THURSDAY WITH THE UNVEILING OF THE BUTTER COW.

IT TOOK 76 HOURS AND 850 POUNDS OF BUTTER FOR SHARON BUMANN TO SCULPT THIS YEAR’S BUTTER COW. SHE’S BEEN THE ARTIST FOR THE PAST 12 YEARS, DESIGNING A JERSEY COW THIS YEAR AND A SCENE WITH A MOTHER AND HER SON SAYS DAIRY BUILDING SUPERINTENDENT MARLA BEHRENDS.

THE BUTTER COW HAS BEEN A STAPLE AT THE ILLINOIS STATE FAIR SINCE 1922. THE BUTTER USED TO MAKE THE COW IS ACTUALLY RECYCLED AND STORED EACH YEAR…AND LASTS FOR ABOUT THREE OR FOUR YEARS.
