Senator Dick Durbin is throwing his support behind the President's decisions to bomb militants in Iraq, but says the problems in the region require more than military force.
Sen. Durbin says critics who question why the U.S. intervening in Syria don't understand the situation.
He adds the military won't be able to change things without the help of the people of the Middle East.
Sen. Durbin believes people who want to send troops into Iraq should look to history.
Thursday night, American fighter jets destroyed artillery shelling Kurdish forces. President Obama also announced military planes had conducted airdrops of water and food to religious minorites surrounded by ISIS forces. U.S. combat troops were withdrawn from Iraq almost three years ago.
