Clinton Landfill To Appeal Ban On PCBs, Gas Waste

The owners of the Clinton landfill are planning to appeal a ban on the disposal of certain types of waste at the site, saying the facility poses no health or safety threat.

Municipal officials around central Illinois have fought plans to bury PCBs at the Clinton Landfill over concerns that a major drinking water aquifer beneath the facility could be contaminated.

Following Gov. Pat Quinn's intervention, state environmental officials last month blocked the plan and also forced the facility to stop accepting waste from manufactured gas plants. Both types of waste contain carcinogenic chemicals. Landfill officials say the facility can safely hold the chemicals.

Calls to Chris Coulter, Vice President and COO of Peoria Disposal Company, went unreturned to Regional Radio News Friday.
