The mayor of Kincaid in central Illinois has resigned after he was charged for allegedly violating an order of protection and possessing drugs.

Reports indicate the Kincaid Village Board unanimously voted Monday to accept the resignation of Douglas A. Thomas. It will pay him about $1,200 for leaving before his term ends.

Thomas faces one count of official misconduct in relation to using village employees for personal gain, as well as two counts of drug possession and violating an order of protection.

Many residents called for him to step down after he was arrested.

The board voted to appoint a longtime resident as interim mayor until an April 7 election. It also accepted the resignation of Kincaid's only police officer and will advertise to fill the position.
