County Board Gives Approval Of Medical Cannabis Facility In DeWitt County

Last month, representatives from Salveo, a company seeking to aid Clinton and DeWitt County in pursuing a medical cannabis growing facility.

The group presented to the Clinton City Council and the DeWitt County Board in hopes of garnering support from both groups to proceed with the application process. According to Alex Thiersch (TEER-sch), who presented to the County Board August 21, this would be a three year pilot program, and Thiersch stresses their goal is for this to be a long term investment locally.

The application process will open up bidding for a limited amount of cultivation centers, which means the application process will be very competitive. Thiersch notes the applications could range anywhere from 800 to 15-hundred pages.

Thiersch points out the State of Illinois has been very thorough and swift in getting this pilot program up and going. He adds while their timeline of getting dispensaries ready to distribute medical cannabis by next spring is somewhat ambitious, Salveo will work to make that timeline happen if DeWitt County is awarded a permit.

The question of waste disposal was brought up at the recent DeWitt County Board meeting. According Thiersch, that's where a local company like Stericycle would come into play. He notes however, they have a very low percentage of waste in their cultivation centers.

According to Thiersch, a letter of support from the County Board and the City Council, along with petitions from community members and business leaders would go a long ways in aiding Salveo obtaining the permit from the state. He notes, community support is scoring part of the application process through the Department of Agriculture.

The DeWitt County Board directed State's Attorney Karle Koritz to craft a letter of support for Salveo and their efforts to apply for a permit for DeWitt County to be home to a medical cannabis growing facility.
