Big Ten Notes; Top 25 Poll Shuffles After Week 1

It's a marquee week for the Big Ten.

Michigan State visits Oregon, Michigan goes to Notre Dame and Ohio State hosts Virginia Tech. The three high-profile matchups give the conference a good chance to make a statement early in the season, which may be more important than ever with the new playoff format.

A 13-person committee will select the final four teams who get a chance to play for the national championship at the end of this season. So getting quality wins before a conference season that is perceived to be not as competitive as those in the SEC, Big 12 and Pac 12 will be crucial.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer says he is rooting for all the Big Ten teams this weekend.

(Undated) -- The top-five went unchanged in the latest "USA Today" top-25 Coaches' Poll. The Florida State Seminoles remain first, followed by Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon and Auburn. Ohio State slipped from sixth to seventh with Michigan State moving up from eighth to sixth. Georgia jumped up four spots to eighth. Baylor and Stanford round out the top-10. Texas A&M made the biggest move going from 20th to 13th following its win over South Carolina. The Gamecocks fell from ninth to 21st. Washington dropped from the rankings with Missouri moving in at number-22.

(Madison, WI) -- Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Joel Stave is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury. Wisconsin head coach Gary Anderson said Tuesday that the best thing for him right now is to shut it down and give him some rest. Anderson added that Bart Houston will backup starter Tanner McEvoy this Saturday against Western Illinois. The 19th-ranked Badgers are coming off a season-opening loss to LSU on Saturday. McEvoy was just 8-of-24 for 50 yards and two interceptions in defeat.
