 width=>>Bears Place WR Wilson on IR With Designation To Return

The Chicago Bears have placed receiver Marquess Wilson on injured reserve with a designation to return this season and signed cornerback Kelvin Hayden.

The moves were announced on Tuesday.

Wilson, who appeared in 10 games last season, broke his collarbone in training camp. He will miss the first eight weeks and will not be eligible to play until Nov. 9, when the Bears visit Green Bay after their bye.

With Wilson out, the Bears brought in veteran Santonio Holmes. He figures to be the No. 3 receiver.

Hayden was released by the Bears on Saturday as they trimmed their roster to 53. He missed last season because of a torn hamstring after appearing in 16 games in 2012.

(New York, NY) -- The NFL is suspending Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker four games for violation of the league's policy against performance-enhancing drugs. Pro Football Talk reports Welker took a Molly that was cut with amphetamines while at the Kentucky Derby. He tested positive for the PED and lost his appeal, which took place two weeks ago. He will not be permitted to practice with the team during the suspension. The 33-year-old will be eligible to return in Week Six as the Broncos have a bye week in Week Four. Welker returned to the practice field Monday as he continues through the NFL's concussion protocol after he suffered his third concussion since November 17th during the preseason. He hauled in 73 passes for 778 yards and 10 touchdowns during his first season in Denver in 2013.

(Undated) -- The NFL is reinstating defensive tackle Josh Brent as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. He will serve a 10-game suspension for his January conviction of intoxication manslaughter following the death of teammate Jerry Brown Jr. in a 2012 accident. Brent will be eligible to visit team facilities after Week Six. He can begin practicing if he complies with a list of conditions, including evaluation, treatment and counseling. After the 10-week suspension, he will be considered for full reinstatement following an additional report from the NFL's substance abuse program advisers. Brent won't see action until Week 12 at the earliest as the Cowboys have a bye in Week 11.

(San Diego, CA) -- Former NFL player, pro baseball player and heavyweight prizefighter Charlie Powell has died at the age of 82. "U-T San Diego" reports Powell died on Monday, and had been suffering from dementia for years. He was such a good multi-sport athlete in high school that he had contract offers to play baseball with the St. Louis Browns and basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters, he had football scholarship offers from Notre Dame and UCLA, and he was a champion in both the 100-yard dash and the shot put. His greatest success was as an NFL player and a boxer, even matching up against Muhammad Ali. Powell played five seasons in the NFL as a defensive lineman for the 49ers and Oakland Raiders.

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin says his team will be ready for Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Johnny Manziel [[ man-ZELL ]] in their Week One matchup. Tomlin anticipates both starter Brian Hoyer and Manziel will both see playing time on Sunday. Hoyer beat out the former Heisman Trophy winner in the preseason, but Tomlin says the Browns did not draft Johnny Football "in the first round to watch. We fully expect them to utilize him in some capacity in this football game." Hoyer threw for 261 yards and a touchdown and an interception in the preseason, while Manziel passed for 296 yards and two touchdowns.
