Cardinals Win; Cubs, Sox Lose

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Adam Wainwright fired a complete game and allowed one run as the Cardinals rolled the Brewers 9-1 at Miller Park. Wainwright improved to 17-and-9 with three strikeouts and one walk. Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer in the win and Matt Carpenter added two RBI. The Cardinals lead the NL Central by four-and-a-half games over Pittsburgh. Carlos Gomez drove in the lone run in a pinch-hit single for Milwaukee, which remains a half-game out of the second Wild Card spot. Jimmy Nelson fell to 2-and-7 after allowing four runs in five frames.

(Chicago, IL) -- Gerrit Cole tossed six-plus innings of four-run ball as the Pirates topped the Cubs 10-4 to sweep the three-game series at Wrigley Field. Cole improved to 8-and-5 while hitting a two-run homer. Neil Walker, Jordy Mercer and Andrew McCutchen also went deep for Pittsburgh, which is four-and-a-half games back of St. Louis for first in the NL Central. The Bucs are half a game up on the Braves and Brewers for the second Wild Card spot. Travis Wood gave up seven runs in under two innings for the loss. Mike Olt was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Chicago.

(Cleveland, OH) -- Carlos Carrasco tossed eight-and-two-thirds innings of four-hit ball as the Indians blanked the White Sox 2-0 from Cleveland. Carrasco improved to 7-and-4 while Cleveland swept the Sox. Michael Brantley was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Tribe. Cody Allen locked up his 19th save. Cleveland sits three-and-a-half games behind Seattle for the second Wild Card spot. Scott Carroll allowed two runs in seven innings for the loss. Chicago has lost four straight.

(Bronx, NY) -- "Derek Jeter Day" in New York will be remembered as one of the most elaborate player ceremonies ever. Retiring Yankee captain Derek Jeter was honored before Sunday's game against the Royals, with the festivities lasting nearly an hour. Among those on hand were NBA legend Michael Jordan, baseball Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr., Reggie Jackson and Joe Torre [[ TORE-ee ]], plus new commissioner Rob Manfred. Jeter was presented with numerous gifts, including a check for 222-thousand-222-dollars and 22 cents for his Turn 2 Foundation. The Yankees also unveiled a 30-foot banner of the 40-year-old shortstop, and three NASA astronauts tipped their cap to Jeter from space.
