DeWitt County Sheriff's Office Responds To Several Weekend Vehicle Accidents

The DeWitt County Sheriffi's Department responded to several weekend vehicle accidents between September 4 and 7.

Investigation into the scene of an accident which occurred on 9/7/14 at 12:38 P.M. revealed that
Megan Monahan, 29, LeRoy was traveling on Rosebud Road at the intersection of Prairie Chapel Road.
Monahan said she turned left and entered into the intersection when she observed a motorcycle
traveling eastbound on Prairie Chapel Road. Shad Bonnell, 40, Wapella said he looked up on the rear
brake and entered into the north ditch to avoid collision with Monahan.  width=Bonnell said his motorcycle
then fell onto his left side as it entered the ditch, coming to rest next to a concrete culvert. The
motorcycle sustained damage to the entire left side and rear area from skidding on its side. Both
vehicles were driven from the scene.

Investigation into the scene of an accident which occurred on 9/5/14 at 4:20 P.M. revealed that Jeffrey
Klawitter, 34, Wapella was westbound on North First Street in Wapella, approaching Locust Street.
Alicia Short, 24, Heyworth was northbound on Locust Street, and came to a stop at North First Street.
Klawitter stopped at the stop sign, then turned south onto Locust Street. The turn was cut short, and
Klawitter struck the front driver’s side of short. There were no injuries reported or observed. Klawitter
was issued a Citation for Improper Lane Usage. Klawitter was issued a promise to comply and was
released.

Investigation into the scene of an accident which occurred on 9/4/14 at 12:18 A.M. revealed that Holly
Thomas, 36, Clinton was traveling southbound on Cotton Street in Hallsville and proceeded to turn
eastbound onto Church Street. Thomas was weaving to both sides of the road, leaving tire marks
where she had traveled. Thomas left the roadway driving north onto private property. She struck the
driveway which was elevated. The vehicle sustained damage to the front passenger side tire and the
plastic bottom of the bumper became dislodged and was left at the accident scene. Thomas left the
scene of the accident. She was found and no injuries were claimed by the driver or passenger. Thomas
was issued Citations for Failure to Report Accident to Police Authority, Improper Lane Usage, Leaving
the Scene of an Accident and Failure to Reduce Speed/ Accident. Thomas was issued a notice to appear
and was released.
