Illinois State Team Takes Part In Solar Challenge

Illinois State University's solar car team plans to travel the United Arab Emirates to show off its alternative energy vehicle.

Reports indicate the team will participate in the Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge in January. The team was selected as part of an international field from six continents. The university's selection follows a second-place finish in the Formula Sun Grand Prix last year.

The event's ending coincides with opening ceremony of the World Future Energy Summit. The United Arab Emirates is among the 10 largest oil and gas producers in the world, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Event organizers are subsidizing getting the car from Illinois to Abu Dhabi, but team members estimate another $20,000 to $30,000 will be needed for the team's transportation, food and lodging.

ISU President Larry Dietz said that finding the additional money is "still under discussion."
