DeWitt County Sheriff's Office Reference Point For Agencies Across State, Country

 width=After the recent events that transpired to cause great turmoil in Ferguson, Missouri, the DeWitt County Sheriff's office has been the point of reference for agencies looking to make sure their bases are covered in the future.

The DeWitt County Sheriff's office was one of the first law enforcement agencies to introduce a trial of body cameras that several officers wore while on patrol. According to DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner, the discussion and research of using body cameras has significantly increased in the last month.

The Ferguson, Missouri events have brought into question corruption and prejudicial officers in America. The Sheriff says while the body cameras are not going to automatically make bad officers become good officers, the body cameras have been very helpful in their short use in DeWitt County.

The Sheriff feels body cameras allow his officers to get the best evidence possible. When he first came on as the Sheriff of DeWitt County, he explains most of their evidence was being collected through the video of the dash board. Sheriff Shofner says the body cameras have paid major dividends already in his office.

The laws and policies for the Sheriff's department in regards to use of the body cameras has been very difficult to write. According to Sheriff Shofner, the policy is currently very conservative and he has to do much tracking from a state and national level about the eavesdropping laws.
