Data Shows Illinois Marijuana Business Competition

Illinois officials have detailed how medical marijuana business applications are distributed around the state.

The numbers released Thursday show intense competition in some regions for a limited number of cultivation and dispensary permits. For example, in Cook County, the state received nine applications for cultivation centers and will award two licenses.

In Grundy, Kendall and Will counties, the state received 14 applications and will award one cultivation center license.

There's less competition in some parts of the state for dispensary licenses. In 10 districts, the state either received no applications or just one application to run a marijuana retail shop.

State officials say the program will hold a second application period for districts where no qualified applications were submitted. That will happen after the first selection of applications.
