Illinois Man Accused of Assaulting Pregnant Girlfriend

A West Peoria man is accused of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend and then attacking sheriff's deputies and trying to grab one of their guns during his arrest.

According to a sheriff's report, 28-year-old George I. Jernigan came home drunk Thursday and began shoving his girlfriend into walls. Charges against him include aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated domestic battery and battery of an unborn child.

According to reports, the woman, 25-year-old Brenda Banks, is four months pregnant.

She told officers she grabbed a knife for protection during the confrontation and that her boyfriend was cut during the struggle.

Jernigan is being held on $25,000 bond. It was not immediately clear if he already had an attorney.
