Heyworth FFA Members Win State Soil Competition

width=Tuesday Heyworth FFA members were named the winners of the State Soils Career Development Events at Blackhawk Community College.

Braiden Estes finished first, Ben Holland second, Braidyn Bantner seventh, Gavin Edwards ninth, and Nick Roysdon 71st, all in individual scores.

Students learned many different concepts in agriculture class and got to practice what they learned in a competitive event against other school from across the state. Some of the skills they needed to master included slope percentage of the land, water movement through the soil, percentage of organic matter, soil texture percentage of sand, silt, and clay, soil structure, soil color of plow layer subsoil and substratum, and calculate soil loss by using a algebraic equation.
