Thanks to a federal grant, the DeWitt County Sheriff's Department will be able to up enforcements to battle a specific problem locally.
According to DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner, the grant will allow his deputies to target drunk drivers on major holidays. He explains the grant will pay overtime expenses for officers who have to work extra on holidays or days off for this special enforcement.
The grant has a very specific purpose and because of that, it cannot be used to replace other budget areas in the department. According to the Sheriff, It can only be used toward getting drunk drivers off the road.
The Sheriff is always surprised by the number of drunk drivers his department catches, which is why he feels any additional help in the effort is always appreciated.
This particular grant is fairly competitive and the Sheriff says it's the first time DeWitt County has received this particular grant in the last decade.
