University of Illinois Frat To Meet With School Officials About Sign

Members of a University of Illinois fraternity are expected to meet with the administration soon to discuss a sign they posted during homecoming weekend.

The sign, which was shaped as a giant paddleboard, featured a drawing of an American Indian holding a knife and looming over a gopher. It was paired with the words "Gut the Gophers." The sign was displayed outside of the Delta Chi house Saturday, when Illinois played the Minnesota Gophers in football.

University spokeswoman Robin Kaler says the display was disappointing and didn't coincide with the school's commitment to maintain a welcoming community. She says Illinois wants fraternity members to realize how their behavior impacts fellow students and the campus climate.

Reports indicate Delta Chi leaders will meet with Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs staff to address the university's concerns.
