Sangamon County Unveils Plans For Mobile Health Clinic

Sangamon County has unveiled a new mobile health clinic that will distribute flu shots and treat single-parent and low-income families.

According to reports, county Department of Public Health officials showed off the 32-foot-long van on Tuesday. They say it will stop in rural communities to make health department services more accessible and will help respond to disasters and emergency events.

The van includes two exam rooms and a bathroom.

The department spent $95,000 in grants to buy, transport and upgrade the 17-year-old vehicle that has been driven less than 31,000 miles. It was funded by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine's Rural Health Initiative, as well as the state.

Health department director Jim Stone says a new mobile clinic would have cost around $300,000.
