Doctor In Fraud Case Back In Jail Over Drug Charge

A Taylorville doctor who was allowed to remain free while awaiting sentencing for stealing Social Security disability payments is back in custody.

It's reported that that Vernon Klinefelter was jailed Friday after a recent arrest on unrelated charges of cocaine possession and driving under the influence.

Those charges stem from an Oct. 11 incident in which authorities say the 62-year-old Klinefelter was stumbling and appeared confused at a store in Pawnee. According to police, responding officers found cocaine in his car, which he had left running in the parking lot.

The federal judge in his fraud case revoked his recognizance bond, arguing the cocaine arrest shows he's a danger to the public.

Klinefelter's lawyer, Thomas Finks, objected and argued unsuccessfully for 24-hour home confinement.
