Illinois Treasurer Race Very Close

The race for Illinois treasurer is too close to call.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, there's less than 1 percentage point between former House Republican Leader Tom Cross and Democratic state Sen. Michael Frerichs.

The race to be the state's chief investment officer was marked with unusual intensity this year as it was the lone open statewide post on the November ballot. Current Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford sought a gubernatorial run over re-election. He lost in the four-way GOP governor primary.

During the campaign, Cross of Oswego enjoyed better statewide name recognition during the campaign after his two decades as a legislator in Springfield. Frerichs of Gifford has said he has more financial expertise after serving previously as Champaign County's auditor.
