Piatt County Sales Tax Referendum Passes; New High School Referendum Fails

A referendum on the Tuesday ballot in Piatt County on a proposed sales tax implementation has passed.

As polls closed Tuesday and ballot were tallied, the vote came out in favor of a "yes", but it was very close. The vote 3769 to 3255.

By just over 500 votes, Piatt County can now begin taxing an additional one-percent on certain items.

The Monticello School district also put a referendum on the ballot Tuesday about constructing a new high school. The measure failed by a vote of 2344 to 1977.

The measure proposed the question of acquiring land to construct a new high school at a cost of around $40-million.

The sales tax proposal was intended to help offset the cost of the proposed new high school.
