A Springfield nonprofit is looking for donations to pay for the building of a war memorial honoring service members who received Purple Heart medals for their combat experiences.
Hayes-Krell Memorial Chapter 159 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is looking for an additional $10,000 to $12,000 for a Purple Heart Memorial to be installed at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield. Members plan to collect donations Nov. 15 at Springfield's Sixth Street Walmart.
Officials say the chapter has raised about $32,000 so far, with a number of donations from various military organizations.
Chapter Trustee Robert Cowles says any money collected beyond the cost of the memorial's construction will be donated to veterans' organizations.
