Kevin Harvick claimed his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship by winning the season-ending Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday. Harvick passed Denny Hamlin for the lead with seven laps left and held off Ryan Newman for his fifth victory of the season and 28th of his Sprint Cup career.
With the win, Harvick bested Newman, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano for the series title. Hamlin finished fifth in the year-ending race, while Logano came in 16th. All of the final four drivers eligible for the title were in the top-10 for a majority of the race. Harvick is the 30th different driver to win a championship in the 66-year history of the series.
