Donna Evans, 51, formerly of rural Farmer City, has been arrested for theft of over $10,000 in public funds from the Village of DeWitt.  Evans served as the Village Treasurer at the time of the alleged thefts.  The arrest was a result of a year-long investigation by DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office.  

Evans was arrested on a warrant at her current residence in Shelby County, Texas.  She will be extradited to Illinois to face felony charges of Official Misconduct and Theft.

Sheriff Jered Shofner said cases like this should be a wake-up call for all government entities, "Regardless of the size of local government, we owe it to the taxpayers to make sure public funds are protected by a system of checks and balances.  This type of theft is preventable".  

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
