Decatur Hires New Chiefs With Local History

Decatur has new police and fire chiefs who have each worked for the city for years.

According to reports, new fire chief Jeff Abbott joined the Decatur Fire Department in 1995. The 46-year-old has since been a lieutenant, captain, deputy fire chief and interim chief.

Similarly, Brad Sweeney went to work as a patrol officer in 1995. Sweeny, who is 42, later worked as a master patrol officer, sergeant and lieutenant.

City Manager Ryan McCrady announced their appointments Thursday.

McCrady said the two have proven themselves capable of doing their new jobs.

Sweeney follows Todd Walker, who retired Sept. 12. Abbott replaces Matt Sekosky, who retired Nov. 30.
