Clinton Fire Department Responds To Saturday Chemical Spill

It was an eventful weekend for local first responders.

Starting with Saturday night, a chemical spill on one of Clinton's busiest streets forced the redirection of traffic. According to Kyle Livingston of the Clinton Fire Department, the call came in between 5:30 pm and 6 pm of a large tanker that was stuck at the underpass on Van Buren Street. He indicates upon arrival, there were several leaks, that included an oil spill.

The scene was originally being worked on as an accident scene but Livingston says they quickly considered it a hazmat situation. He says chemicals were making their way into the sewer system.

Livingston says there was visible damage to the railroad viaduct, so that had to be inspected as well.

He says it was a great effort of several agencies coming together and working together for a smooth outcome.
