A central Illinois man now faces a first-degree murder charge after a toddler he's accused of beating died of his injuries.
Nineteen-year-old Deon Davelle Wells was initially charged with aggravated battery.
According to police, his girlfriend's 19-month-old son, Koffi Harris, was brought unconscious to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center on Monday night. The boy had multiple injuries, including head trauma.
The toddler was pronounced brain dead on Tuesday and was later taken off of life support.
Peoria County State's Attorney Jerry Brady said at a hearing Friday that Wells hit the child and slammed his head into a hardwood floor.
According to reports, Wells was ordered held on $1.5 million bond.
Online court records do not show whether Wells has an attorney.
