Illinois Wesleyan Claims First In CCIW, Wichita State Escapes Bradley

The Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team closed out the first half on a 23-9 run to cruise past Millikin 80-61 at the Griswold Center on Wednesday. Coupled with an Augustana loss in overtime on Wednesday, the Titans have sole possession of first place in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Wesleayan was led by the 12 points of Bryce Dolan. Alec Bausch added 11 points and nine boards. Pat Sodermann chipped in with 11 points and freshman Brady Rose had 10.

Zach Long led Millikin with 12 points and five boards and Tommy Pilackas added ten points.

The Titans improved to 16-5 overall and 8-2 in the CCIW, sweeping the season series over the Big Blue. Millikin slipped to 8-13 and 3-7 in the CCIW following the defeat.

The Titans return home to host North Central on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game is the annual "Pink Zone" game with monies raised from auctions and tee shirt sales going to benefit the local Community Cancer Center.

North Central (16-5 overall, 6-4 CCIW) upset No. 6 Augustana on the road 72-70 in overtime on Wednesday night and defeated Illinois Wesleyan, 78-72, in Naperville on Jan. 3.

Fred VanVleet made two free throws with 4.6 seconds left, helping No. 16 Wichita State hold on for a 62-59 victory at Bradley on Wednesday night.

The Shockers went without a field goal for the final 12 1/2 minutes in their first game since Saturday's 70-54 loss at Northern Iowa. After VanVleet's clutch foul shots, Evan Wessel stole Bradley's ensuing inbounds pass to help Wichita State hold on for the win.

Ron Baker had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Shockers (20-3, 10-1 Missouri Valley), who led 35-22 at halftime. Tekele Cotton and Darius Carter had 10 points apiece.

Bradley (7-17, 2-9) has lost three in a row and eight of nine. Tramique Sutherland scored 18 points for the conference's last-place team.
