Rauner Goes After Fair Share Dues

The Governor is taking another shot at unions inside of government.

On Monday Bruce Rauner is ended the practice of “fair share” union dues. Fair share workers are those who opt out of joining a union but pay fair share dues. Rauner says those workers on average pay $577 a year to the union. Fair share members still benefit from the union, including job protection and labor negotiations.

Rauner says this isn’t about weakling unions, rather giving workers the right to exercise their freedom of choice.

Rauner isn’t stopping with the order – he will have a team of lawyers mounting a case in federal court to have the US Supreme Court rule on fair share union dues and their constitutionality.

Rauner says that the case will be handled at no cost to taxpayers. The case will be handled by former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb and his Winston & Strawn law firm.
