School Board Elections Creating Confusion Among Voters

As the spring elections near, DeWitt County voters will have to wrap their minds around a difficult scenario as it relates to one of the local races.

The Clinton Board of Education is one of the many of governing bodies with an election this spring, and according to local leaders, it has been the subject of a great deal of confusion. Dana Smith, DeWitt County Clerk explains the school board consists of three members from each township within the district. She notes much of the confusion surrounds the representation of Clintonia township.

In addition to the confusion surrounding the Clintonia Township candidates, Smith says confusion has arisen given who voters can cast their ballot for. She explains there are no restrictions in who you can vote for.

To ensure each township has equal representation on the School Board, Smith notes, there is a scenario that could play out where certain candidates may get more votes than another, though the candidate with the lower vote totals get on the Board.

The two-year seat that is up for election is the unfinished term of the late Tom Pruser, who's seat was filled by Russell Long shortly after Pruser's passing.

The spring election is April 7.
