Group Homes Advocates Push For More Community Care For Disabled

Forces who believe developmentally disabled Illinoisans should be in community care and not state run institutions make their sales pitch.

Equip for Equality's Cheryl Jansen was among advocates calling for the state to close six of the state's seven remaining developmental centers. She waved a carrot at state lawmakers, saying such a move would help them with their budget woes.

Governor Rauner said during the campaign he supported keeping the doors open at Murray Developmental Center. Former Governor Pat Quinn called for closing all state-run institutions, and shut down the Jacksonville Developmental Center in 2012.

Some parents of the disabled residents in state care maintain community care doesn't provide sufficient monitoring or care and they say uprooting their sons or daughters place of residence is a threat to their health and mental well being.
