Champaign Man Pleads Guilty in Student's Drug-Related Death

A 21-year-old Champaign man has pleaded guilty to killing a University of Illinois student last year during a drug-related robbery.

Reginald Scott entered the plea Tuesday to a charge of first-degree murder in the January 2015 shooting death of Vicente Mundo of Chicago. Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz said Scott agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a sentence of no more than 60 years. He could have faced a life sentence if convicted at trial.

Scott admitted shooting the 20-year-old Mundo as Scott and another man robbed him of marijuana and cash. They had told Mundo they wanted to buy marijuana from him.

Daniel Gonzalez, 21, also faces a first-degree murder charge in Mundo's death. He has pleaded not guilty.
