Local Law Enforcement Focus of the Week

Across the country this week, the focus is on law enforcement officials who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

It's 'Law Enforcement Memorial Week' and from a local to state to national level, leaders are taking time honoring the men and women who have lost their lives serving and protecting our communities each day. DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner explains there are ceremonies going on all over the country for this week.

The Sheriff says there are two primary ways officers die in the line of duty. The first is gunfire, and the second is automobile accidents. Sheriff Shofner indicates, because the first is unlikey, they have begun focusing training in his office on the latter.

In his time in DeWitt County, Sheriff Shofner has dealt with a couple police officers deaths while on duty. While officers can take all the precautions in the world, accidents still happen.

Many of the vehicle deaths are related to traffic stops. The Sheriff implores motorists to slow down and get over if possible when a law enforcement officer has someone pulled over. He asks drivers realize that is a person with a family that is counting on them to be home after their shift is over.
